I was just talking to my co worker about The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao which he’s reading, and I was reminded what an incredible book it is and how immensely talented and awesome Junot Diaz is.
For me, there’s no better word for his stories than heartbreaking. They are modern day tragedies in a sense. And yes, dark humor and catharsis mixed in there. While they’re heartbreaking, there’s something comforting I think about accepting that happiness and sorrow cannot exist without each other.
He’s also a pretty inspiring guy to listen to for thoughts about writing:
“What we do might be done in solitude and with great desperation, but it tends to produce exactly the opposite. It tends to produce community and in many people hope and joy.”
