I’m Jane and I’m a playwright and screenwriter living in Brooklyn. I’m proud to say that I’m a native New Yorker. Some of my favorite things include browsing in book stores, movies, HBO programming, and brick oven pizza.

  1. Hi Jane-

Just a quick note- I found your blog through the grad-cafe website, and wanted to let you know that you aren’t alone in the playwriting grad application process! I just finished my last submission, and now I started looking for fellow writers to share the waiting room experience with.

I don’t really expect to hear anything for at least another month, but it is my first time going through this process, and although I’ve received my share of rejection letters from publishers and production companies, I’m pretty nervous about grad school- I feel like I am ready to go, and I hope that a few of the programs see that, too.

Here are the schools I applied to: Brooklyn, Brown, Yale, Northwestern, Iowa and UCSD.

I found the application process to be much more stressful than I thought it would be- from organization to getting my letters of rec squared away to writing the essays/statements (not to mention polishing up the actual writing samples!) I am glad that it is done, but I can’t wait to find out where I will be next fall. I’m sure you feel the same way!

I dig your blog! Keep writing, and I really hope that your grad school dreams are realized!

  2. Thanks Rob! I really appreciate your comment. I’ve been feeling really isolated in this process, because I don’t know anyone else going through it. So it’s always nice to know I’m not alone, and that you also found the process more stressful than you thought it would be.

I will send good thoughts and vibes out there for us, and hopefully we’ll both be starting grad school in the fall.

  3. Hi Jane,

I found your blog through the gradcafe site as well. I’m a playwright living in Brooklyn as well – I see we’ve both taken classes at ESPA as well. Do you know of any good writing groups in the area? ESPA was great because of the deadlines (plus it was great to meet other writers) but due to some financial issues, I just can’t afford it right now.

    • Hi Sam,
Thanks for commenting! I love ESPA. As for writing groups in Brooklyn, I participated in the Greenpoint Writers Group for a bit but that’s very specific to that area.

I think finding a playwrights group can be hard. I was part of a development group that was great for three years, but it’s ending this year. So I’m also on the hunt for a new group. If you find one or start one, I’d love to join!
